U15 Canadians Rally From Two-Goal Deficit vs Hawks

by K.P. Wee

The U15 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians got two goals from Braelyn Nunley as they rallied for a 4-4 tie against the Vancouver NW Hawks on Saturday at the Canlan Ice Sports North Shore.

Making his 11th appearance of the season, Kaz Patrick-Russell stopped 32 shots for the Canadians. He was particularly busy in the second period, with GVC being outshot 15-7 in the frame.

After the Hawks took a 1-0 lead six minutes into the contest, Nunley got his first goal of the game at the 9:35 mark of the first period, and then Markus Sivak scored with just 1:40 remaining in the period—his first goal of the season—to give GVC a 2-1 lead.

The Hawks, tough, struck for three straight goals in the second, before Nunley added his second of the game to cut the deficit to 4-3. Keenan Mak then scored the tying goal with 9:58 left in regulation—his second tally of the season—and there was no further scoring in the contest as both teams skated with the single point.

Nunley’s two goals give him eight on the season, second on the club behind only Leander Han (10).  Through 19 games this season, Brian Woolfenden, who recorded an assist on Mak’s tying goal, leads the way with 21 points and 14 assists.

Despite the point, the Canadians remain in last place in the U15 standings, with a 4-14-1-0 mark through 19 games. Although GVC has won five games on the season, the Dec. 14 victory over the Hawks has been changed to a forfeit by the BCEHL due to a roster issue, so the team’s record shows four wins and 14 losses.

The Canadians, who were off on Sunday, next play a pair of home games at the Richmond Oval on Jan. 25-26, against the Hawks on the 25th and the Vancouver NE Chiefs on the 26th. The game against the Hawks is scheduled for 5:15 p.m., and the Chiefs contest is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Both games can be seen on playfullscreen.com
