U17 Canadians Finish Regular Season With Losses in Cariboo
The U17 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians closed out their regular-season schedule over the weekend by dropping both their final two games at Prince George’s Kin Centre, losing 3-2 and 6-3 to the Cariboo Cougars.
The Canadians finished seventh in the U17 standings and will take on the second-place Fraser Valley Thunderbirds in the opening round of the playoffs.
GVC finished with an overall record of 14-19-2-1 in its 36 games. The sweep by the Cougars allowed Cariboo to finish ahead of GVC in sixth place, with 33 points compared to the Canadians’ 31.
On Saturday, the Canadians led 2-0 thanks to first-period goals from Thomas Kanavos and William Trolland. The Cougars, though, tied the game with two goals a minute apart midway through the second, and then Cariboo scored the game-winner short-handed with 8:51 left in regulation. D’Angelo Brual made 28 saves in the defeat. Gavin Dacpano and Henry Goldman each had two assists.
In the regular-season finale on Sunday, Trevor Chin scored twice late in the third period and Connor Ma also scored, but the Canadians lost by three. D’Angelo Brual made 40 saves, including 18 in the second period. Kaz Patrick-Russell, called up from the U15 Canadians as an affiliate player, saw some action in goal in the third period.
Despite the two losses, the Canadians finished 10-5 in their final 15 games.
Trevor Chin and WIlliam Trolland finished tied for the team lead with 16 goals apiece, while Nicholas Harris had 14 and Henry Goldman had 10. Gavin Dacpano led all blueliners on the team with seven goals, while Connor Ma had six.
Trolland, meanwhile, also led the team with 22 assists and 38 points, with Dacpano again leading all defensemen on the club in both categories with 15 assists and 22 points.
In goal, D’Angelo Brual led the club with eight wins, two shutouts, and 21 games played. Joshua Read had a team-best 3.58 goals-against average in his 18 games.
