U18 Canadians Wrap Up Regular Season Schedule on Tuesday

by K.P. Wee

The U18 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians will close out their regular-season schedule on Tuesday when they take on the Vancouver NW Hawks at Burnaby’s Scotia Barn for the third period of a suspended game from Family Day, Feb. 17th.

The Canadians trailed 3-1 after two periods in that contest when a power outage in the second intermission caused the suspension of the game.

GVC then lost 4-3 to the Hawks on Friday (Feb. 21) and 8-5 to the Okanagan Rockets on Sunday, both at the Richmond Olympic Oval, to close out the home schedule for the season.

On Friday, GVC led 2-1 on goals by Helius Guan and Nathan Van Hoeke before the Hawks rallied for three straight goals for a commanding 4-2 lead. Nishaan Gill scored midway through the third period to cut the deficit to 4-3, but could not get the tying goal in the one-goal loss. Alan Peregrym continued his outstanding play in goal, making 39 saves, 18 of them in the second period.

On Sunday, Erik Hoemberg, Luca Martyniuk, and Hudson May all scored in the second period, and Kaden Meyer and Helius Guan added third-period goals, but GVC fell just short against Okanagan. Alan Peregrym started the game, but affiliate player Aidan Pang played part of the third period between the pipes for GVC and made 10 saves.

With a 10-19-4-2 record, GVC will finish in seventh place in the U18 standings and take on the second-place Valley West Giants in the first round of the U18 playoffs.

With the rest of the BCEHL’s U18 division having completed its regular-season games, Alan Peregrym will lead the league in starts (25) and appearances (27) among all goaltenders. Meanwhile, Luca Martyniuk leads the Canadians with 20 goals on the season, and Kaden Meyer leads the club with 38 assists and 49 points.
