U15 Canadians Fall Just Short in Quarter-Finals in U15 Championship
The U15 AAA Greater Vancouver Canadians travelled to Langley Twin Rinks over the weekend to take part in the BCEHL’s U15 Championship, falling just short in the single-game knockout stage in the quarter-finals in overtime.
The Championship weekend began on Feb. 27, with the Canadians falling 9-0 to Okanagan and earning a 6-6 tie with the Vancouver North West Hawks. Koen Lee and Braelyn Nunley both scored twice against the Hawks, with Leander Han and Caden Chou also collecting goals for the Canadians, who rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the contest.
A 6-0 loss to the Vancouver NE Chiefs the following day gave GVC an 0-2-1 record in Pool A in the round-robin portion, meaning the Canadians would take on the first-place Cariboo Cougars from Pool B in the quarter-finals.
In what turned out to be an outstanding game by the Canadians in the quarter-fi8nals on March 1, GVC wound up losing 5-4 in OT. Noah Law scored just eight seconds into the game, but the Cougars scored three quick goals over the next four minutes for a 3-1 lead. Maxwell Clemens scored the only goal of the second, before the Cougars made it 4-2 with 7:26 left in regulation. But Noah Law scored his second of the game with 5:06 left, and then Keenan Mak tied the game with only 59 seconds to go. The Cougars wound up winning the game with 1:39 left in OT, eliminating the Canadians.
It was a valiant effort by the Canadians against a Cougars team that would reach the final before losing 5-1 to the Rockets.
Noah Law, Braelyn Nunley, and Koen Lee each finished with a team-high two goals in the Championship, with Law leading with four points. Nunley, Lee, and Leander Han each had three points.
Congratulations to the U15 Canadians on a strong playoff over the weekend, and we’ll see everyone next season.
